California Colleges Can Reopen With Guidelines

As colleges make plans to have students on campus again, public health officials set the guidelines they must follow. The California Department of Public Health reported that having students on campus would be based on the conditions of their local area, access to COVID-19 testing and how equipped the school is at addressing COVID-19 occurrences. Most colleges have decided to begin fall semester with mainly online classes and some access to in-person classes and dorming. UC Berkeley and UC Merced are two colleges that have decided to reopen their campus under new guidelines.

Five Immunity-Boosting Recipes During COVID-19

Sarah Garone, a nutritionist and food blogger shares five recipes to help the immune system during COVID-19. There has been no discovery of foods designed to combat corona virus but Garone states that these recipes can help immune systems because they are rich in iron and help decrease inflammation. Each recipe lists the ingredients, instructions on how to prepare the meal and the serving size. Some of the ingredients that help an immune system are spinach (which helps immune cells to work correctly), and tomatoes (which helps reduce inflammation, and prevent diseases).

Tips for Graduates Regarding Mental Health

A study conducted in 2018 states that “graduate students are more than six times as likely to experience depression and anxiety as compared to the general population.” Graduate students deal with multiple stress factors, but with the current pandemic there can be an added stress factor. Students are encouraged to acknowledge their feelings. It is not uncommon to feel sad, depressed, or uncertain during this time. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of university support services and other available sources such as workout apps and apps for healthy recipes.

Family Privacy During Remote Learning

Online classes are impacting the privacy of students and the actions that parents, students and teachers must take to create a safe environment online. Parenting reporter Christina Caron talked to seven experts in online education, privacy and safety. They gave four tips relating to privacy. First, discuss the meaning of privacy with the child. Second, talk with them about when to use the camera and how frequently. Third, think about the advantages of using a camera. Lastly, look at the learning programs they will be using. Are the programs safe?

Thirty-Nine Missing Children Found in Georgia

Thirty-nine missing children were found during a two-week search called “Operation Not Forgotten.” U.S. Marshals Service announced that thirty-nine children were found and nine people were arrested. The thirty-nine children were anywhere from three to seventeen years old. Fifteen kids were sex trafficked and others were abused. The head of the Missing Child Unit, Darby Kirby, said she felt good about arresting the perpetrators and that the unit is in the process of helping the kids that were kidnapped. Many homeless children are vulnerable to child sex-trafficking but prostitution is affecting people all around the world, regardless of family background, social class and ethnicity.
