Record Breaking California Wildfires Burn Over Four Million Acres

Growing wildfires have burned more than four million acres (1.6 million hectares) all throughout California in 2020. The state has suffered five of its six largest wildfires in history this year as scientists blame global warming.

“It goes to show how dry the state is and how volatile the vegetation is.” said Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean.

Over 8,454 homes have been destroyed and 31 people have died in this year’s fires. Californians are expected to get a break from fires as cooler temperatures approach Nor-Cal this week, with a chance of rain this upcoming season.

The Paycheck Protection Program Failed Many Black-Owned Businesses

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is a federal loan used to assist small businesses established by the CARES Act. 23% of Black business owners who did not receive PPP said their applications were denied support with little explanation as to why. Just 12.9% of businesses obtained loans, while 18.9% of businesses nationwide did per an updated request for review. During the pandemic, approximately 41% of Black-owned small businesses became inactive.

“Access to capital and money has always been an issue with respect to Black enterprise, that’s nothing new,” says Rev. Horace Sheffield, the head of the Detroit Association of Black Organizations.

“The pandemic has exposed or exacerbated that disparity.”

Those who did qualify for PPP have to apply for loan forgiveness after receiving the loan support. They’ll only get 100% of it if they meet the program’s specified requirements.
