Twenty three year-old Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has been banned from first team activity after reactionary comments posted on his social media about manager Erik ten Hag. The club has made a statement on the situation and manager Ten Hag has not wanted to comment more on the matter. It is an ongoing matter between the player and manager.
After Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal on Sept. 3, 2023, manager Erik Ten Hag was asked about Sancho’s absence from the line-up in the post match press conference. “You have to reach a level every day at Manchester United and you have to make choices for the frontline and for this game he wasn’t selected,” stated the Manchester manager about Sancho.
Sancho reacted to the comments from his manager about his performance during training and went onto issue a statement on his X ,formerly Twitter, where he rejected the claims as “completely untrue” and that he was being made a “scapegoat” by the manager. He has since taken down the posts from his X account.
Sancho has been urged by some of his teammates to apologize to Ten Hag so he can return to training, as this standoff has gone on for three weeks and is ongoing.
In a separate statement by the club, they have stated “Jadon Sancho will remain on a personal training programme away from the first-team group, pending resolution of a squad discipline issue.”
Sancho has not spoken about the matter or issued an apology, but has recently deleted his Instagram account, leaving only X as his only active social media platform. Ten Hag was asked again about Sancho in the post match press conference after Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. Ten Hag stated during the press conference “I don’t talk about players that are not available”
Sancho, who is in his second year at Manchester United, has only seen a total of 76 minutes played. All of these minutes came from bench appearances prior to his statements towards his manager. Sancho was transferred to Manchester United from German club Borussia Dortmund in 2021, for a fee of 85 Million Euros equating to about 100 Million Dollars. His contract will run up until 2026 and has an option for a sixth season.
