Dallas' Chances of Reliving Glory Days

By: Thomas Davila

The Dallas Cowboys have not won an NFC Championship game or won a Super Bowl since 1995. That is more than twenty-five years and fans cannot be too thrilled about that. What is it going to take to get this once thriving franchise to get back to their winning ways?

The Cowboys finished with a record of 6 wins and ten losses last season. The season before that they finished with 8 wins and 8 losses. Their most promising season to date was the 2018-2019 season where they flourished with a record of ten wins and six losses. This past season they failed to make it into the playoffs. They made the playoffs but lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the first round the prior season.

There is talk of Dallas playing in the NFC championship game and making it into the Super Bowl in 2 years time but a lot can happen as far as their coaching staff and roster goes.

Quarterback Dak Prescott could be on his way out of Dallas during the offseason. Prescott and the Cowboys are currently renegotiating his contract. They are trying to talk Prescott into taking less money but he does not seem to be too thrilled about that. Reports suggest that Prescott will instead play on the franchise tag for a second straight season. That means that his salary would increase to 20% making just over $37 million.

If Prescott decides to leave the Cowboys what are their options? It is rumored that Russell Wilson could be traded from the Seahawks and one of his choices to go play is Dallas with the other option for him being Chicago. Dallas would obviously be the best option for him because owner Jerry Jones could afford Wilson.

Dallas signed head coach Mike McCarthy last year during the off-season and after going 6 and 10 in his first season. they can expect another lackluster season if a change is not made at head coach.

The Cowboys nation is weary of their choice of head coach in Mike McCarthy after he was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers in 2018. What other areas are the Cowboys struggling at?

According to an article in USA Today they are struggling both offensively and defensively. Dallas' defense was "historically bad; giving up the 2nd most yards in the teams history." As far as their offense is concerned it all depends if players like Tyron Smith and Zack Martin can stay healthy enough to play. Dallas relies on their running backs and wide receivers like Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper to make big plays, give Dallas yardage and score touchdowns because they are young, fast and healthy.

If Dallas wants to have a chance of making it all the way to the NFC championship game and play in their first super bowl in over twenty-five years then changes need to be made either to their offense, defense or their coaching staff. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has the final say on any changes that need to made. He does the hiring and the firing and given the choices he has made in the past, it is only a matter of time until the less than mediocre team gets back on track.
