Fairplex in Pomona to expect arrival of migrant children from U.S.-Mexico border

In an unusual embark, the Fairplex in Pomona will soon begin housing hundreds of children traveling through detention facilities along the U.S.-Mexico border. The temporary shelter will be able to accommodate up to 2,500 migrant children but as of this week, 250 are scheduled to arrive. Where are these children traveling from? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services officials, the children are coming from as far as El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. 

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis says, “The mission here is to provide whatever support we can once these children come into our arms.”

Ontario Police Museum has closed

After 11 years of operation, the Ontario Police Museum has closed their doors. The museum showcased law enforcement artifacts used throughout the 130 years the police department has been operating. 

Albert Vande Steeg, a retired Ontario police detective and co founder of the museum says, "The chief of police asked us to vacate the site in order to make room for a cafe." 

The museum had a variety of items such as a collection of badges, hand-written crime logs, and an old jail cell. 

Steeg says, “The only history left will be what is in your heart and mind.”

Dodger Stadium to close coronavirus vaccine site

The COVID-19 vaccination site at Dodger Stadium will close by the end of May as the city shifts to appointment-free walk-up centers as the demand for vaccines declines. Deputy Mayor Jeff Gorell told the Los Angeles Times that there has been a major drop in appointment slots at clinics run by the city of Los Angeles. According to the mayor’s office, the Dodger Stadium site has been the location for 1,038,899 COVID-19 tests and more than 420,000 vaccine doses. As of Friday, 50% of eligible L.A. County residents have received their first dose, and 30% are fully vaccinated.

Indoor arcades and playgrounds can reopen in Los Angeles County

As of Friday, April 30, Los Angeles County has lifted their restrictions on the closures of indoor arcades and playgrounds. The latter will be restricted to 25% capacity with other mandated safety notifications.

Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer says, “We must continue to be careful and take sensible precautions in the weeks ahead while we vaccinate more people, especially as we look to move to the least restrictive tier in the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy framework.”

U.S. extends face mask requirements on planes through September

The Transportation Security Administration has extended the mask requirement for those traveling on plane, train, and bus. In addition, masks will still be required at all times when inside airports and train stations and will be issued through September 2021. Violators can expect a fine of up to $1,500.
