San Bernardino County sees highest COVID-19 hospitalizations since August
Coronavirus cases peaked last week in San Bernardino County. According to state data, there were 289 new cases on Nov. 8, the most since Aug. 31. San Bernardino County’s COVID-19 hospitalizations are up 40% compared to last month. Test positivity rate is 7.4%. The county remains in the purple-tier category, which prohibits many indoor business operations such as movie theaters and dining.

Disneyland hotels no longer taking reservations in the foreseeable future
Those who were planning a winter getaway at one of the three hotels at Disneyland Park in Anaheim will have to alter their plans. The Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, and Paradise Pier Hotel will not accommodate reservations through Dec. 31. COVID-19 health and safety measures issued by the state could leave Disneyland unable to reopen until summer 2021. On the brightside, Disneyland’s California Adventure Park will reopen Buena Vista Street for shopping and dining only starting Nov. 19.

Fairplex in Pomona announces layoffs
The coronavirus pandemic has led the Fairplex to lay off more than half of its full-time employees. 82 employees who were furloughed back in Spring were told about the layoffs on Oct. 30. There is a 58% drop in employees, leaving a total of 28 full-time workers. The cancellation of the annual Los Angeles County Fair had a huge impact economically at the fairplex. The fairplex has a few drive-in events planned for the holidays, but will also focus on helping the region with coronavirus response efforts such as a drive-thru food pantry and COVID-19 testing.

Hawaii is open for tourism
Travelers from the mainland United States have an option to travel to a warmer destination for the holidays. Since October, Hawaii no longer requires travelers to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arriving to one of the islands of Hawaii. Instead, those who test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours prior to their departure will be exempt from having to quarantine. Avi Mannis, senior vice president for marketing at Hawaiian Airlines says,
“Hawaii is at the vanguard of what travel will look like for the next year or so as we reopen.”

Cal State schools see a surge in enrollment
The Cal State system has seen the smallest decline in enrollment compared to other universities across the United States. 85.5% of freshmen continued into their second year at 1 of Cal State’s 23 campuses scattered across California.The campuses collectively enrolled 485,549 students during Fall 2020, a 0.75% increase over last fall. CSU Chancellor Timothy White said,
“The enrollment numbers this year clearly reflect the resilience and determination of our students in staying the course to earn a CSU degree.”
