Finding Familia in the Puente Club
By Maria Zaldivar
As the spring 2024 semester draws to a close, I can't help but reflect on my transformative experience with the Puente Club. From the moment I walked through its doors, I felt embraced by a sense of familia. With every meeting, every interaction, it became clear: this wasn't just a club, it was a community where bonds are forged over laughter, shared experiences, and, of course, amazing food.
"Somos familia," they say, and it's more than just words. It's a feeling that permeates every aspect of the club. From the interactive games that bring us closer together to the heartfelt conversations about our culture and identity, each moment spent with my fellow Puentistas has been invaluable.
One of the most profound aspects of my journey with the Puente Club has been the opportunity for introspection. Together, we've delved into the constraints of our culture, examining how they can both empower and hinder us. Through open dialogue and mutual support, I've learned how to navigate change while staying true to my roots, shedding outdated beliefs along the way.
But it's not just about personal growth; it's also about community impact. The Puente Club creates a space where everyone is encouraged to become the best version of themselves. Whether it's through volunteering, advocacy, or simply lending a listening ear, each member contributes to a collective effort to uplift our comunidad.
And let's not forget the food! "Siempre nos vamos con barriga llena y corazón contento" rings true every time. From mouthwatering pizzas to savory tortas, our meetings are a feast for the senses. Because here, nourishing both body and soul is a priority.
Puente has opened my eyes to countless opportunities, including scholarships like the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. With their guidance, I've been able to explore resources available on the Chaffey College campus, some of which were entirely new to me. For example, Panther Bucks provided by Panther Care have been a lifesaver, easing the burden of expenses and allowing me to focus more on my education.
Moreover, Puente offers exciting opportunities to visit various Californian university campuses throughout the semester, expanding our horizons and fueling our aspirations for higher education.
Before concluding, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you and acknowledgement to our advisors Henry Leonor, Athena Corrales and Sean Connelly. Their dedication and warmth have made every meeting welcoming and inclusive, setting the tone for the familial atmosphere we cherish.
As the semester comes to an end, I will leave you with a statement from this semester's club president, Josue Vazquez-Manriquez: pictured at the end of the gallery.
To anyone considering joining the Puente Club next semester, I say: ¡Hazlo! You won't regret it. Come be a part of our familia, where acceptance, growth, and camaraderie await. As for me, I know that my journey with the Puente Club is far from over. Because when you find a community as special as this one, you hold on tight and never let go. ¡Aqui somos familia!
