Whether you will be returning for spring semester here at Chaffey or transferring into university (congratulations), here are six films to enjoy during winter break. Spoiler alerts for every film. Inspired by Instagram’s trend of “six movies to get to know me”.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

This movie is sure to give you Europe trip fever (minus the stalking and murdering). Every scene is captivatingly luscious, filled with wealth and sunshine. This is a masterpiece film from beginning until end. Matt Damon only takes on the best of roles and this is no exception. Getting to see the stellar cast composed of young Matt Damon, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, and Gwyneth Paltrow. It’s thrilling and suspenseful.

A City of God

Experience the harsh reality of 1970 Rio, Brazil, in this 4x Oscar- nominated film. Every scene is thrilling and leaves my heart jumping. The cinematography shines, ahead of its time. Displays the corrupt dystopia that people can be born into. Poverty creates crime. Gangsters run the city. It's easy to fall into a trap of thinking there isn’t much room for morals when disaster is all around you. Making it through the first gruesome half of the film is glorious once Rocket finds his meal ticket in journalism. The real photographer whose life story inspired the film is Andre Camara. Trigger warning for extreme violence, drug use, and nudity.

Legally Blonde

One of the most quotable, most iconic films of the early 2000’s. This film inspired an entire generation of women and cemented into our brains to dream as big as possible. Elle Woods’ Harvard adventure unfolds thinking she would win back the love of her life, but she ends up becoming the underdog who goes on to be the best student while not having to compromise her morals. This movie invites us to choose ourselves and prioritize our own future instead of begging a man to see our worth. A timeless and enamoring watch.

The Devil Wears Prada

A woman who starts off not being able to stand her ground or have a backbone ends up taking the fashion world by storm. We see a radical transformation as she goes from plain jane to fashion icon. As time goes on it is revealed to her that her support group do not necessarily have her best interests. Discover the complexities of self-discovery in the glamorous realm of high fashion.

Little Women

This movie is like watching a beautiful painting come to life. Based on a novel, Greta Gerwig knocks it out of the park with this film. This film offers a captivating exploration of sisterhood and individual aspirations.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Indulge in opulence with Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, and Penelope Cruz. Another Europe centered dream. Appreciate the beautiful architecture as the film showcases the indulgences in life through food, art, and passion. A feast for the senses.
