The Specialty Equipment Market Association conference is an annual industry trade show in Las Vegas that takes place over four days where automotive manufacturers, both big and small, gather to display new products and connect with industry buyers worldwide.

This year, Chaffey College was able to send nine students: four automotive majors, one electrical engineering major, two mechanical engineering majors, one journalism major and one american sign language major to the industry only event to participate in networking events, educational seminars, workshops and to meet industry professionals.

During the four day event, students were able to network with other students across the country, enjoy a breakfast with equipment manufacturers within the automotive industry, explore all the trade show had to offer and make connections on their own. Female students also had an additional workshop where they able to network with women within the industry.

Anything and everything automotive related can be found in the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, with exhibit space exceeding 1 million square feet and 2,400 exhibiting companies. The displays include but are not limited to: detailing products, tires, tools, electric car conversions, artwork, performance modifications, restoration products, safety technology, bike racks, tents, media companies and build competitions.

In the main parking lot there was a motorcycle safety course introduction for any individuals interested in trying out a motorcycle and a drift car experience run by Skip Barber Racing School. The Hoonigans in partnership with Ebay Motors also set up a section with grandstands where spectators could watch cars burn rubber and create clouds of tire smoke. These activities offer attendees a chance to get up close and experience automotive culture while taking a step back from the more business oriented side of the industry.

The SEMA trip is a valuable opportunity not only for students who are automotive majors, but for students in almost all fields. The opportunities for networking are vast while the seminars and workshops offer insight and education that extend far beyond just the automotive field.
